Middle Fly District

This region is characterised by wide flood plains, numerous tributaries and swamps. The upper stream sections have vegetation such as rainforest, swamp forest and sago while the lower reaches of Middle Fly District are primarily flood plains where extensive areas of swamp grasses grow. The latest population estimate sits at 79,349 (Census 2011), and includes the following Local-Level Government (LLG) area of Balimo Urban, Bamu Rural, Gogodaia Rural, Lake Murray Rural, and Nomad Rural, and the population centres of Balimo, Bamu, Gogodala and Nomad. It also contains the largest lake in the country, Lake Murray.
